Why temperature matters more than willpower

The cold-shock response peaks in the first 10-20 seconds. Your breathing — not your tolerance — is the real limit in that window. If you cannot control your breathing within about 30 seconds, get out. The calculator's beginner recommendations are conservative for exactly this reason.

For people with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or poor circulation, cold water immersion carries real risk — check with a doctor before starting. Never plunge alone in open water.
